Owner and designer of Kyn You Believe It (among many other things.)
At the end of 2018, I had a bit of an early-life crisis. I was about to graduate from UT-Austin and had decided to drop my teaching program just days before my student teaching semester was going to start. As a person who always has a plan, this last-minute change felt terrifying.
All of a sudden, I was a gal who was flyin' by the seat of her pants and who had no idea what she wanted to do with her life. (Picking out clothes every morning was hard enough, and now all of a sudden I was supposed to decide how I wanted to spend the rest of my life? Talk about pressure.)
For two months, I mulled over my options: event planner, copywriter, and PR coordinator all made it onto my short-list, but nothing felt RIGHT. It was two months of sleepless nights, endless pros/cons lists, and incessant requests for advice from everyone in a 50 mile radius.
Sometime in February of 2019 all the sleepless nights and pros/cons lists led me totruly accepting what I'd always known: I loved to make things. Like, capital-L Love. I always had this desire to sell handmade things, but I never pursued it.
I decided that it was about time to listen to my heart. On March 1, 2019, KynYouBelieveIt was born.
When I first started creating products for this business, I tried to do it in a no-pressure-attached kind of way. I illustrated or lettered whatever quotes and concepts that felt like "me," and I slowly found the audience that this artwork resonated with.
So often, people are told to fit themselves into "xyz" kind of box, but anytime I attempt to follow that advice, I'm immediately ready to be out of that box. I refuse to fit myself into boxes of set styles, color palettes, themes, etc, and it has worked out just fine. After all, the only constant in life is change, so why should I limit my growth?
Across the website, you'll find a few over-arching themes: clever humor, mental health topics, Taylor Swift, reading, inspirational quotes, florals, and more – often with these themes overlapping. Other than that, you'll notice that I like to mix lettering with illustration, often without any consistency from one design to the next. And that's okay!
5+ years later, and I like to believe that this approach to my art means there's a little something for everyone across the site. And if not, maybe there will be soon. :)
When I started this business, my biggest goal was to pursue my passion of "making things." (Pretty vague, huh?)
Since establishing that goal, the list of things I've learned to make continues to grow and grow, but my one true love is the world of screen-printing.
I began a self-taught journey of screen-printing in September 2020, and since then, it's been a long, winding road of learning the ins-and-outs of inks, screens, and everything in between. It's a process that keeps me humble, and I continue to learn new things every day.
It took me a while to reach this point, but now I like to consider myself an ink-slinging pro, and getting lost in the mesh of a print job is my happy place.
Today, I'm proud to say that every piece of apparel offered in the KYBI shop is printed by yours truly, and that's a fact that I keep close to my heart. There are thousands of people out in the world who own apparel printed with my two hands, and I hope we'll get to add you to the list soon too. <3
Gotta put that English degree to use somehow, amiright? All the blog posts found on the website are written by me, and topics range from DIYs, to business tips, life lessons, and everything in between. Here's a look at my most recent posts.
